Vehicle Overview of the
Sprinter Van Rental Initially assembled by Freightliner, the
full-size Sprinter van adopted a Dodge nameplate in early 2003.
The van now competes in a class with the
Chevrolet Express,
Ford
Econoline Wagon and
GMC Savana. For 2008, the 12-passenger van includes an
emergency exit window. An electronic sliding door is available
on cargo and passenger vans.
For 2007, Dodge made the
Sprinter van wider, taller and longer, added two new engines
and increased cargo and towing capacity. Changes for 2008 are
comparatively minor.
Designed specifically for commercial applications, the
Sprinter is built on one of two wheelbases. Sprinters can
have a 65- or 76.4-inch-high roof, or what Dodge calls the mega
roof, which provides 84 inches of walk-through height. Sprinters
come in 2500 (three-quarter-ton) and 3500 (one-ton) ratings, but
only the 2500 series includes a passenger model.
Exterior A large grille incorporates the Dodge Ram
logo. Sprinters ride on one of two wheelbases, 144 or 170
inches, and are 233, 273 or 289 inches long overall. The back
doors open to the vehicle's full height and swing open 270
degrees. One-touch, triple-flash turn signals and wide-angle
mirrors are standard. An electronic sliding door is new for both
the cargo and
passenger vans for 2008. The passenger van now includes an
emergency exit window.
Sprinters have an independent front suspension, rear leaf
springs and power rack-and-pinion steering.
Interior Up to 12 occupants fit inside a
passenger-carrying Sprinter. Two people sit up front and as many
as three more rows of seats can be installed. A standard,
removable four-seat rear bench is new for cargo vans. For 2008,
all models can have swivel bucket seats in front. Sprinters have
a flat cargo floor and tapered rear wheel housings. Cargo volume
is 127 cubic feet, though overall cargo capacity can swell to
600 cubic feet in some models. Air conditioning is standard.
Other features include a tilting and height-adjustable steering
wheel, a CD player and power windows and locks.

Winnebago Introduces New 2008 Itasca Navion
iQ
The 2008 Navion iQ is unlike anything on the market today. This 24 foot
Class C motor home is built on a 11,030 lb GVWR Sprinter chassis with a
Mercedes Benz 3.0 liter turbodiesel engine providing power, performance
and fuel economy. The 24CL floorplan features full body paint and an aerodynamic
front end. A front skylight adds a modern touch and abundant natural lighting
that can be controlled with a convenient built in shade. The European-inspired
interior features well-appointed, curved cabinetry that's not only beautiful
but provides plenty of storage, while the rear dinette easily converts into
a comfortable 50 inch by 82 inch sleeping space at night. Plus, the rear
of the coach features a large, panoramic window for a great view. A 19 inch
LCD TV mounted in the dinette area tilts and swivels for optimal viewing
throughout the coach and operates on 12 Volt DC power so you can watch TV

Vans Van Rentals joint venture in China finally receives license
Fujian Daimler Automotive finally received a business license from the Fujian Provincial
Administration for Industry & Commerce. It is a joint venture founded by Fujian
Motor, DaimlerChrysler and China Motors. With total investment of around Euro 200
million, the initial product portfolio includes the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Vito
and Viano for the local market. The factory is planned in Fuzhou with an annual
capacity of 40,000 and an expected start mid 2009.

Chevron Delo 400 LE 15W-40 has received approval for Mercedes Benz diesel engine

Dodge announces pricing of All-New 2007 Sprinter
The Chrysler Group announced the pricing for the all new 2007 Sprinter this morning
starting at $30,950 and including all-new Adaptive ESP®. As expected gasoline and
turbodiesel versions are offered, and the price difference is $1840. The 3.5 liter
V6 produces 254 hp and 250 lb.-ft. and the 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesel 154 hp and 280
lb.-ft. "As the foundation for Dodge's commercial vehicle strategy, the all-new
2007 Dodge Sprinter boasts expanded versatility and offers more choices, features
and value while re-establishing the new commercial standard for full- size vans,"

ADS manufactures SDA Sprinter Diagnostic Assistant V1.0
ADS sent an email announcing their PC based diagnostic system that offers coverage
and features comparable to Star Diagnosis, and the Dodge DRB/Star Tester for Sprinter
vehicles. They use an easy-to-use, graphical interface that includes training and
help documents for each important feature. They made this system available to large
scale fleet users, for the past few years, and have about 3000 installations worldwide,
with over 1000 in the US with UPS alone. On December 1, they'll launch an aftermarket
version for smaller fleets and individual users, their SDA - Sprinter Diagnostic
Assistant V1.0. All worldwide versions of Sprinters from 1994-current are covered,
and new 2007 models will be added by June '07, they say. sprintersoft.com
Nov 27, 2006 New 2007 Sprinters can be ordered starting in November
Stephen White, Roanoke Motors, Illinois gave an update on the much anticipated 2007
Sprinters. They can be ordered starting in Novemver and the first batch of 1500
to 2000 will be only gasoline engined. Starting in December the Sprinters with Mercedes-Benz
turbodiesels can be ordered. As previously announced they will be assembled in South
Carolina once the Ladson plant is retooled and are to be sold by both Dodge as well
as Freightliner. Deliveries are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2007.

What Van Rentals Online over in the UK reviewed the new Sprinter after it was introduced
there recently - and strangely with the steering wheel on the "wrong" side. Doug
Hetrick sent in the info. They like the emphasis on safety with load adaptive ESP
including ASR skid control supplied by Bosch, the new 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesel,
the larger load and space capacity and versatility and the 5 speed transmission.
Their verdict: "Sprinter is undoubtedly a winner — in fact it's staggeringly good
— and we can only applaud the stress the Three Pointed Star has placed on safety.
Unfortunately for Mercedes, however, virtually all of its competitors have raised
their game over the past few months and have unveiled a steady stream of excellent
products; Ford's new Transit and Fiat's latest Ducato are two prime examples. As
a consequence the latest Sprinter, impressive though it is, may face an even tougher
struggle than its predecessor if it's to make headway in a hard-fought market."

In the last few days I noticed a number of Sprinter turbodiesels used by businesses.
Down at Laguna Seca the famed Skipp Barber racing school shuttles students with
their Dodge Sprinter passenger van. On the airport run the red and white Bayshore
Ambulance number 328 Freightliner Sprinter MedicMaster passed us on the highway,
looking similar to the photo above, and an OfficeMax Sprinter delivery Van
Rentals didn't
trail much behind. And then a Sprinter outfitted with a complete mobile kitchen
design studio passed through here recently. Both Freightliner and Dodge will offer
the new Sprinter, once the plant expansion near Ladson, South Carolina, is completed
next year. In phase I the capacity is to expand to 32000 per year.

Last year 28,100 Sprinters were sold in North America, 49% more than in 2004. The
optional BiXenons support curve swivelling and corner lighting. Dürr AG built an
innovative RoDip paint system for the Sprinter plant in Ludwigsfelde which rotates
the vehicle during the cathodic electrophoretic bath thus ensuring corrosion protection
on surfaces, edges and inside cavities. The new Sprinter will be introduced in early
2007 after the new production site near Charleston is retooled. It will be offered
with gas and diesel engines although nearly 100% of all buyers in Europe where both

2007 Sprinter: new model and new assembly plant in USA
DaimlerChrysler will spend $35 million to retool a plant in Ladson near Charleston
in South Carolina and hire 220 workers to build the new model 2007 Sprinter cargo
vans. The new Sprinter comes with a large number of body variants, with three wheelbases,
four body lengths and three roof heights: normal roof, high roof and the new super
high roof. The new range includes variants between 3.0 and 5.0 t gross vehicle weight
and, as a panel Van Rentals with a load capacity of 7 to 17 m³ for example, meets almost
every conceivable requirement. The new Sprinter features engines up to 258 hp (190
kW) based on the Mercedes-Benz M272 3.5 liter gasoline V6, load ADAPTIVE ESP® with
extended functionality for all models, hill start assist (HSA), a new Mercedes-Benz
V6 diesel engine based on the OM642 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesel with 184 hp (135 kW)
and 295 lb-ft of torque from 1600 to 2400 rpm, bi-xenon headlamps, Super Single
tires and Keyless Entry & Slide. DaimlerChrysler will also build the new Volkswagen

Sprinter Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) to be tested in Kansas, California
The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto spearheaded the technology
in the recently introduced Dodge Sprinter Plug-in Hybrid Drive together with ZF
Sachs. Three units will be manufactured in Mannheim and tested in 2005 in the USA,
a diesel version by Kansas City Regional Transit and two gasoline versions at Southern
California Edison and the South Coast Air Quality District to test the technological

GERMANY: DaimlerChrysler invests in Van Rentals plant body and paint shop - report
Sep 02 2003 DaimlerChrysler said on Tuesday that it will invest € 300 million to
build a new body and paint shop at its cargo Van Rentals plant, near Berlin, according to
Dow Jones. The work on the expansion of the plant in Ludwigsfelde, Germany, is for
the production of the NCV3, the successor to the Mercedes Sprinter, the report said.
Construction, which begins in October, is due to be completed in August 2004 at
the plant where DaimlerChrysler employs 1,500 people, Dow Jones said.

Adapting the ESP software for the Sprinter's requirements was quite a challenge
for the engineers. The large variety of engine and gear types, wheelbase sizes and
maximum permitted vehicle weights resulted in around 30 different types. Each of
them requires an individual adaptation of the 80 or so different parameters in the
ESP software. Depending on the actual load carried, the weight and center of gravity
of the vehicle can change significantly: but this problem area was also successfully
solved so as to ensure the greatest possible degree of safety for drivers and passengers.
The optional Sprinter ESP was introduced at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2002 in
Hannover. In the US ESP became standard for the 2004 model year in the 2500 line.

Sprinter plant to be built in Georgia, CANCELLED
A new $700 million plant for the Sprinter cargo and passenger vans might be built
on a 1500 acre site in Pooler, near Savannah, Georgia, employing 3000. It would
be a coup for Georgia, who had last succeeded to attract an auto plant in 1947.
Governor Roy Barnes made the announcement in a press conference on October, 18,
2002. The smaller Vito vans might also be built there. The final decision has not
been made yet and is expected in the summer of 2003. The European Sprinter is built
in Düsseldorf and in the future also in Berlin-Ludwigsfelde together with the Vaneo,
and maybe the new Volkswagen LT3. DaimlerChrysler has been cooperating with VW since
1996 on commercial Van Rentals development. The decision to build the plant was postponed
in July 2003 and the project was cancelled in September 2003.

But it doesn't stop there: the Sprinter is now seeking to reinforce its leading
position in the Van Rentals market by offering a range of innovative transportation solutions.
The latest example is a refrigerated Van Rentals conversion from Kerstner Fahrzeugklimatechnik
GmbH. One of its exemplary features is the use of new insulation technology for
a c-value (thermal conductance) below 0.4 W/m2.K., meaning that the refrigerated
Van Rentals conversion complies with the tightest statutory regulations for the transport
of chilled produce.
The refrigerator unit is driven by an electric motor and fed with power from
the vehicle's alternator and an auxiliary battery. The refrigeration capacity is
therefore generated without drawing on the power of the vehicle's engine, avoiding
the need to tamper with the original vehicle engineering in any way.
Comprehensive standard specification
This means that following conversion to the Kerstner refrigeration technology,
the Sprinter Van Rentals is still able to refrigerate its load when loading or unloading
in pedestrian precincts, for example, without passers-by being irritated by exhaust
emissions or the noise of the diesel engine.
Standard specification includes an integral draining system with water drain
which ensures that dirt and the water used for cleaning are drained away efficiently,
plus vacuum-insulation panels which allow the insulation panelling around the wheel
arches to be made so flat that an entire Euro palette can be loaded and between
the wheel arches.
Also new are the optional multi-chamber systems which feature a number of different
temperature zones to provide optimal refrigeration for different groups of produce,
plus self-cleaning surfaces in the refrigerated body which repel particles of dirt,
as well as a rotating spray nozzle on the ceiling which flushes dirt out of every
nook and cranny in the load compartment, thereby ensuring maximum cleanliness. Integral
guide rails for fitting shelves and intermediate floors are fitted as standard.
A choice of either aluminium or stainless steel panelling is available for the bottom
floor. Another brand new development known as the "chilled airflow curtain" can
be specified as an option. Every time the light-action load compartment doors at
the side and rear of the vehicle are opened, a stream of chilled air is generated
to maintain a constant temperature inside the load compartment, thereby preventing
the refrigerated goods from warming up when the doors are opened or the chilled
air from escaping during loading and unloading. Should the refrigerant unit ever
develop a defect, it can be replaced with a new unit in a matter of minutes thanks
to the "quick-out" system. This means that the vehicle does not have to be unloaded
and results in zero downtime.
DaimlerChrysler introduces the Sprinter cargo and passenger vans to the US. They
come with the MBE 600 2.7 liter turbocharged 5-cylinder diesel with 154 hp and 243
lb-ft. @ 1600 to 2400 rpm.

Fuelcell Sprinter goes into service at UPS
The nation's first medium-duty commercial delivery truck powered by a fuel cell
that converts hydrogen gas to electricity begins hauling packages in Los Angeles
for United Parcel Service Inc. today. It will be used on an urban delivery route
and is expected to pile up 10,000 miles a year of stop-and-go driving in tough city
traffic. Data about the truck's performance will be used to help DaimlerChrysler
further its fuel cell development program. UPS has 1,800 Sprinters in its fleet.
The truck has the same 1 ton payload and 437 cubic feet cargo space as conventional
diesel engine Sprinters. The fuel cell system, including storage tanks for the compressed
hydrogen gas, is mounted under the floor and powers an 85 kW (114 hp) electric motor.
The fuel-cell Sprinter has a range of about 155 miles before needing refueling and

Mercedes introduces Sprinter Diesel Electric Hybrid
at the IAA commercial vehicle show in 2004 in Hannover. It's based on the Sprinter
311 CDI (with 109 hp 2.2 liter 4 cylinder turbodiesel) with a 3.5 ton GVWR. The
parallel diesel and electric engine promise fuel saving between 10 to 50%. The Sprinter
can be run optimally in every condition: quiet and emission free in in-city loading
zones or inside distribution centers with just the electric motor, as well as in
hybrid mode with the electric engine supporting the diesel at low speeds and during
acceleration. Two versions are offered. The Sprinter Plug-In Hybrid Drive comes
with an 70 kW (95 hp) electric motor and plug to be used as generator and recharger.
The normal Sprinter Hybrid Drive doesn't have a plug. Customer trials are planned

kits, up-graded shocks/struts, air bags, sway bars and more. Some products work
better than others. The Koni shocks and struts that I am currently testing are amazing.
